Once the full list of interviewees for the morning session had been checked off, the assisting security officer closed the main double doors to the restaurant, essentially locking them all in. The small but strangely intimidating interview table was set up near another door, where Kallie presumed they would eventually exit.

The federal agent stood up and introduced himself, explaining briefly why he was there.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” he began, drawing their attention and silencing the chatter. “My name is Agent Christopher Paul, with the FBI. I know many of you haven’t yet been informed, but there has been a death on the ship, and—”

He waited again for the sudden flurry of whispers to quiet down.

“I’m here to investigate. I’ll make these interviews as quick as possible, but we do need to speak with everyone.”

“Why weren’t we told about this before?” a shocked-sounding woman asked loudly.

“Who died? Was it a murder?” someone else asked.

A man in the back of the room snapped, “Obviously it was a murder, or the FBI wouldn’t be here.”

“I heard it was that shady lawyer with all the billboards by Disneyworld,” an older man added, and a few other voices agreed with him.

To Kallie’s horror, another man answered, “Good riddance,” and a few others agreed with his opinion too. She looked toward the corner and saw the widow crying openly at a small table. Her friend held Skylar in her arms, and the formerly brave pre-teen was weeping again too.

No one else seemed to notice them, and Kallie was on the verge of saying something herself, when Officer Navarro stood up and snapped angrily, “The family of the victim is in the room. Please hold your nasty opinions.”

Several jaws audibly snapped shut in embarrassment, or at least an ounce of decorum.

The female officer shot a look at Agent Paul, that telegraphed a heartfelt longing to punch him, but he continued his introduction, oblivious.

“We’re proceeding with these interviews in sections, by floor of the ship, so I’ll be calling you in room order, not alphabetically. Please approach the interview table quickly when your name is called, and we’ll all try to get out of here post-haste.”

He sat down at the table and Officer Navarro called the first name.
